Chemistry is recognized as the central science. Its role in connecting all the other basic sciences has been widely accepted and appreciated. Therefore understanding of the chemical entities and their reactions at the undergraduate level is the foundation for interfacing with other basic sciences.

FACILITIES:

1. A library with 115 books pertaining to Organic, Inorganic and Physical Chemistry texts are available, to enhance the knowledge of the students.
2. Well equipped laboratory in which each student can carry out the practical individually.
3. Campus Parent Tutor system for personal care and welfare of the students.

Industrial Visit Report

On 18^th of December 2021, sixteen undergraduate students along with faculty Mr. S. Alaguraja and Mr. S. Karthikeyan of Nagarathinam Angalammal Arts and Science College, Department of Chemistry visited Pharmafabrikon, Otthapatti, Karuppayurani Post, Madurai – 625020, Tamil Nadu, India. We left our college at 9.00 am and reached Otthapatti by 9.30 am. We travelled in a college bus with Covid-19 safety procedure.

This visit was mainly focused on to understand the procedures involved during the manufacturing of pharmaceutically important drugs. Pharmafabrikon produce many biologically active drugs as well as cough syrup and many other medicinal products. Well trained industrial officers there explained about the facilities available inside the industry, their methods of drugs manufacturing, the equipments used for the tablet making as well as labelling. He also explained the production of cough syrup, explained about the maintenance of the equipment and ethics considered during drug storage and chemical disposal.

As we entered the manufacturing floor with proper personal protective equipment (PPE), the fragrance of the drugs flavouring filled our mind. Next we learnt how to store the active drug materials and solvents before used for drug making.

Next we learnt about the tablets, cough syrup synthesis section and saw the automatic manufacturing machines and workers respectively. After visiting the manufacturing plant, we had a cup of tea with fresh biscuits and took a small break where we had a lovely photo session. With this, we left for college with the lovely memories of the extremely informative Industrial Visit.

OUTCOME OF THE VISIT

• The technology and the equipment used for the manufacturing of medicinally important drugs were made familiar.
• We understand the various processes involved in storage of active material, solvents, tablet as well as cough syrup making and packing.
• Discussion on the difficulties faced and possible solutions to overcome these difficulties was held.
• Students are mainly understood the availability of the job opportunities an drug manufacturing industrial sites.
