B.SC COSTUME DESIGNING AND FASHION TECHNOLOGY

The Department of Costume Designing and Fashion Technology was established in the year 2019 with the aim of providing quality education in the field of fashion and textiles. The course is designed to focus on textile fibers, yarns, fabrics, quality control, and testing, along with knowledge of wet processing of textiles, including dyeing and printing. It also emphasizes historic costumes, embroidery, sewing techniques, technical textiles, clothing care, CAD in the garment industry, retailing, marketing, garment costing, merchandising, and entrepreneurship development.

Eco-friendly textile production is given special emphasis in the curriculum. The programme offers students opportunities to achieve success through imagination, innovation, and enterprise. The department aims to prepare students to face challenges in the apparel industry. Many of our students are employed as fashion designers, merchandisers, makeup artists, professional photographers, and entrepreneurs.

The vision is to nurture and enrich students with comprehensive knowledge in fashion and design creation, building a strong foundation in creativity and technical skills. It aims to develop innovative thinking, adaptability to evolving fashion trends, and the ability to transform ideas into meaningful designs.

The programme focuses on fostering originality, practical skills in garment construction, and an appreciation for textiles and craftsmanship. It also seeks to mould confident professionals who can face challenges in the competitive designing world and contribute effectively as designers, entrepreneurs, and researchers in the fashion and apparel industry.

EligibilityA candidate must have passed the Higher Secondary Examination of Tamil Nadu or an examination (like the CBSE) recognized by the universities as equivalent thereto.

The department has well-experienced faculty members and state-of-the-art laboratories equipped with the latest technology. The B.Sc. Costume Designing and Fashion Technology programme is a three-year degree course comprising six semesters.

Special Features

CDFT students are given excellent opportunities to participate in and represent the institution in fashion shows, designer contests, and other events. The department regularly organizes workshops and seminars and takes pride in securing university ranks.

Ms. K. Yarshawarthini, B.Sc. Costume Designing & Fashion Technology (2022–2025), Nagarathinam Angalammal Arts and Science College, secured First Rank in Madurai Kamaraj University, and received the degree at the University Convocation from the Honorable Governor.

Internship

Students are required to complete a minimum of 15 days of internship in a garment export unit, processing unit, or reputed beauty parlour. The department encourages participation in designer contests, fashion shows, and cultural events. It also regularly organizes seminars, workshops, and industrial visits.

The department organizes regular industrial visits to garment manufacturing units, textile mills, export houses, and fashion studios to provide students with real-time exposure to industry practices.
